History

Walking Well Carmarthenshire started in November 2011 as an initiative of the Carmarthenshire 50+ Forum, supported by Am Dro Am Glonc Sir Gâr. The first group was set up in St Clears and had its first walk in January 2012. The St Clears Walking Well Group now has 50 members and has held fortnightly walks ever since in St Clears and the surrounding area.

The success of the St Clears Walking Well Group was followed by two more groups starting up – one in Llanelli and one in Carmarthen.  More recently, new groups have formed in Gorslas and Whitland and a wildlife-themed group has begun, based in Llanelli but planning to do walks at various locations across the County

Financial support for the pilot phase was provided through a Health and Wellbeing grant from Carmarthenshire County Council. The programme is now funded by the National Lottery and as part of the national Let’s Walk Cymru scheme and is a project of the Carmarthenshire 50+ Forum with the aim of spreading the Walking Well concept across the County as a whole.  Training support is also given by Am Dro Am Glonc run by Public Health Wales.
